Schwarzsee / Zermatt Journal

September 4. Saturday

Gary

Today we went with our friends on the Matterhorn Express cable car from Zermatt to the 2nd station, Schwarzsee, where we hiked for a couple hours, had rolls with Alpkäse, and soup for lunch at the Berg Hotel and Restaurant Schwarzsee on the terrace at 8500 feet above sea level. The Matterhorn was mostly covered in clouds, but that didn’t detract from the surrounding beauty we beheld with every glance in every direction.

The four of us decided to take the gondola up to Schwarzsee, hike around the lake and possibly eat lunch at the restaurant up there. We didn't walk around the lake, it was smaller than we had expected and there was no well defined trail. We wandered about a bit, the two couples eventually going separate ways. Gary and I checked out a small outbuilding, hoping it contained a WC, but it was a Chapel :)

The lake had a gazillion small fish in the sunny area near us. What happens to these as they grow, in a small mountain lake that gets smaller until the spring thaw fills it some? I'd like to know about that small circle of life.

Our friends checked out the restaurant and we decided to have soup there. It was delicious. Gary had made cheese sandwiches using the cheese he bought in Grindelwald, so we shared the sandwiches. They went nicely with our soup.

That evening we all ate dinner together as planned. We stayed at our table for quite some time and had another wonderful discussion.
