Today we drove to nearby lakes in the area around Salzburg known as the Salzkammergut. We asked Rosemarie, the owner of Haus Steiner, for tips. Of course Mondsee and St. Gilgen are top picks, but she said she really likes to go to Mattsee for some relaxing time (not indexed in the Lonely Planet Austria guidebook). That made for a nice route: Salzburg - Mattsee - Mondsee - St. Gilgen - Salzburg. As Rosemarie indicated, Mattsee does seem like the place Austrians go to enjoy the same awesome scenery as elsewhere nearby, but without the crowds of tourists. It was SO beautiful and SO peaceful. We found ourselves whispering on our walk around the Schloss so as not to disturb the serenity of the place. Fun also to catch a sound test for an upcoming wedding there.
